Travelling by Hammock
Travelling by hammock is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but relaxation on the beach combines well with time on safari. Options include the coasts of Kenya and Mozambique, Mauritius the Seychelles and Zanzibar. The choice will generally be dictated by your choice of safari destination.
It's worth pointing out that a safari can also be relaxing, with a natural rhythm to the day which mirrors the activity of the wildlife. Early morning starts may sound intimidating, but it's the best time of day, and the afternoon siesta can be spent snoozing in your tent or perhaps around the camp pool. Indeed several camps that I've stayed in recently had hammocks available!
By hammock highlights on my safaris have included:
- Lake Malawi is an interesting fresh-water alternative to conventional beach. I much prefer swimming without the salt, albeit you have to work harder to stay afloat! Otherwise Lake Malawi feels just like a sea, complete with waves and tides. It also offers sailing and good snorkelling and diving: most UK fishtanks are stocked with cichlids found in Lake Malawi. Amongst the options, Kaya Mawa is one of the most romantic honeymoon destinations in the world, where you can have your own private island for a few nights. Nkwichi Lodge offers squeaky white sand and is linked with the Manda Wilderness Community Trust.
- Zanzibar offers a range of excellent beach resorts, but also has unique aspects that I particularly enjoy. Stone Town is a vibrant and fascinating place to spend a night or two, taking time to wander through the alleyways and visit the historic buildings. For those who particularly enjoy nature, I would highly recommend a few nights on Chumbe Island, an eco-development just off the coast of Stone Town. In addition to beach relaxation it offers exceptional snorkelling in a protected marine park, and fascinating inter-tidal walks. Oh, and the food and service are just outstanding!
