Riding in the Okavango Delta, African Horseback Safaris, Botswana

Travelling on Horseback

Horesback safaris can be specialised trips for experienced riders, and in my opinion they offer the ultimate close-up safari experience. At a practical level, you can cover relatively long distances over wilderness terrain, without having to watch your feet! Moreover, the game senses the horse not the human, so you can have close encounters. Plains game, such as zebra, wildebeest and giraffe, may chose to canter alongside you: although even if you're at a flat-out gallop, a giraffe still seems to be in slow motion. Riding safaris have become a particular passion of mine in the last few years, and I have a dedicated website with more detail, Horseback Safaris.

An hour or perhaps a half-day of horse riding can also be included in more general safari itineraries. There are options in most countries, able to cater for a range of abilities. If you're interested I can look to include riding in your itinerary.
